Music on the go is about to get even more rampant with the announcement of a recent contract between KIOSK Information Systems, Inc. (KIOSK) and Mix & Burn, LLC. The agreement affords new levels of self-service download functionality – specifically, KIOSK is now offering a full DRM-free content library with direct to device download on a self-payment / self-service kiosk.

Even the most demanding music buff can have a selection field day in the Digital f.y.e. Music Store, powered by mix&burn(R). The kiosk’s track library features three million DRM-free MP3 tracks from all the major labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI Music. Indie artist fans can select content from the largest Indie aggregators including IODA, The Orchard, and CD Baby. It’s the equivalent of a cow in a content cornfield, providing everything from mainstream radio hits to rare & hard to find songs.

Selections made off the kiosk can also be independently transacted on the kiosk – browsing, payment, and direct to device download are all menu driven functions created for consumers in an unattended environment. As transactions complete, the labels and their artists are simultaneously compensated for the use of their content. The MP3 downloads are compatible with the vast majority of iPod(R) products, USB/memory cards, and MP3 players. Music purchased plays immediately on the device, and transfers easily to add to a user’s home computer library.

Music is the latest feature to be added to KIOSK’s full line up of multifunction cafe capabilities. Through ZOOX Stations, a KIOSK subsidiary devoted to development and manufacturing of pay-for-use kiosk technology, a single kiosk cafe can now offer music download, photo printing, internet/email access, office software, and casual user gaming. KIOSK CEO Rick Malone stated, “Adding music download features ultimately enables any broadband-connected kiosk to attract more customers and location traffic by providing continuously refreshed content through digital music downloads. With the new direct to device MP3 format, consumers get instant purchase gratification – three words that go a long way toward feature adoption.”

Delivers Low Power, Small Footprint Required for Innovative Netbooks, Handheld Devices

Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA), a global leader in WiMAX SoC technology, introduced its newest Mobile WiMAX baseband IC, a low-power, small- footprint device designed for the expanding mobile PC market.

The new Fujitsu MB86K23 mobile WiMAX baseband IC supports a wide range of channel bandwidths including 3.5MHz, 5MHz, 7MHz, 10MHz, and 20MHz, along with 64QAM, 16QAM, and QPSK adaptive modulation schemes. It provides wireless access using 512/1024/2048 FFT OFDMA with integrated MAC processors, supports antenna diversity and beamforming, and includes all the features required for WiMAX Forum Wave 2 mobile device certification.

The MB86K23 is being manufactured using Fujitsu’s 65nm low-leakage CMOS process and CoolAdjust power-gating technology, which reduces power consumption during operation by switching off power to circuit blocks that are not in use. Standby current for an entire WiMAX module can be reduced to 0.5mA, enabling significantly longer battery life in mobile devices. The new WiMAX baseband IC also incorporates a USB interface, so designers can develop WiMAX USB adapters in ultra-small-form factors. SPI and SDIO interfaces also are included.

“We expect mobile WiMAX to become a key broadband wireless access technology in many portable devices like Mobile Internet Device (MID), Ultra Mobile PC (netbooks), Tablets, and even low-cost handsets for emerging markets. This new baseband IC delivers the low power and small footprint required for these exciting applications,” said George Wu, Director of the Embedded Platform Solutions business group of Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “We continue to apply Fujitsu’s leading-edge process technology and expertise to maximize performance. The new MB86K23 represents an excellent design choice to serve the fast-growing global market for WiMAX-equipped systems.”

Features 36 Percent Power Reduction, 60 Percent Space Reduction from Original Version

The MB86K23 is the successor to the Fujitsu mobile WiMAX baseband IC, the MB86K21, which targeted embedded WiMAX in mobile PCs and PC cards. The new IC is 60 percent smaller than the MB86K21, which was certified by the WiMAX Forum and sampled in summer 2007. (See the May 21, 2007, press release: http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20070521-2.html).

When combined into a chipset with the Fujitsu MB86K52 RF IC and MB39C316 power-management IC, the MB86K23 enables developers to realize the industry’s most compact form factors — just 20mm x 40mm for WiMAX USB adapters, and 30mm x 26.8mm for PCI Express half-mini cards that incorporate both WiMAX and Wi-Fi functionality.

ODM vendors are now planning to release these kinds of products using this WiMAX baseband IC. In addition to its low power requirements and small footprint, the Fujitsu MB86K23 can use software that was developed for the MB86K21, which has passed compatibility testing with many base stations.

Pricing and Availability

The new MB86K23 will be available in 10 mm x 10 mm FBGA packages in April. Pricing is available upon request.

Guidance for full-year 2009:

Given the uncertainty created by the continued turmoil in the worldwide economy, VASCO has decided to temporarily discontinue its practice of providing annual guidance.

“Even though the fourth quarter of 2008 was difficult due to the worldwide economic conditions, 2008 was a successful year for VASCO,” stated T. Kendall Hunt, Chairman & CEO. “In 2008, we made substantial investments in new products, new markets and our infrastructure that we believe will help support our growth for years to come. We are also proud of the fact that VASCO was profitable in each quarter of 2008 in spite of the difficult economies. While the outlook for 2009 is uncertain, we expect to be profitable in 2009 and we believe that our strong balance sheet and our business model put us in a strong position to continue to move our business forward in 2009.”

“The results for the quarter and full year reflect our continued investment in our business and our evolution into a more software-centric company, both of which, we believe, will benefit VASCO in the longer term. Even though the current economy is forcing many businesses to delay purchases and proceed cautiously, it is clear that identity theft and fraud committed over the internet is continuing to grow and interest in our products and solutions remains strong worldwide,” said Jan Valcke, VASCO’s President and COO. “For 2009, we will focus on integrating the staff hired in 2008 more fully to become more efficient. While we plan to minimize our investment in new staff and new initiatives in 2009 until the economic outlook becomes more certain, we will be opportunistic in considering additional investments that would allow us to expand our products, geographic markets or our market share.”

Cliff Bown, Executive Vice President and CFO added, “During the fourth quarter and full year 2008 both our cash and working capital balances increased. For the fourth quarter our net cash balance increased $7.0 million, or 14%, and our working capital increased $2.9 million, or 4%, from September 30, 2008. For the full year, our net cash balance increased $18.9 million, or 49%, and our working capital increased $24.2 million, or 46%, from December 31, 2007.”
