New Alert System Designed for the 11 Million Americans Age 65 and Older Who Live Alone -

eMed-ID, the world’s first emergency medical device franchise, announced the launch of eMed-Alert, a next-generation personal assistance voice dialer designed for seniors who may need to call for help in an emergency. With more than 11 million Americans age 65 and older living alone today, eMed-Alert provides seniors a way to maintain their independence.

“As baby boomers age and join the senior population, we’re seeing an influx of people living alone. This combined with the fact that more than a third of seniors fall each year, reinforces the need for an advanced alert system that provides peace of mind without the burden of a monthly expense,” said Lonnie Helgerson, CEO, eMed-ID Franchising, LLC.

The eMed-Alert system allows the owner to press a single button on a heart pendant or on the system’s base to call for assistance in three different ways. First, a siren is activated on the voice dialer console. Then, the personal assistance voice-dialer is enabled to call up to four phone numbers programmed and play a pre-recorded message to each person. Finally, the voice dialer allows each person who receives a call to “listen-in” through the console so they can hear what is happening in the room.

eMed-Alert is available through eMed-ID’s franchisee network for $129 with no monthly fees. In the event that family and friends cannot be the contacts, an optional professional monitoring system is available for a small monthly fee of $19.95.

“We’ve built the eMed-ID business to provide local communities, including people of all ages, with medical services and products that improve the quality of healthcare and save lives,” said Helgerson. “eMed-Alert is another example of our commitment to families and their loved ones by giving them a device that prepares them for almost any home emergency.”

In addition to eMed-Alert, the company also offers consumers a Personal Health Record (PHR) USB device that will expedite emergency responders’ treatment of trauma victims or those unable to communicate by offering immediate access to their personal medical information. eMed-ID helps consumers avoid life-threatening delays in treatment, medical or surgical complications, allergic reactions and medication errors. The portable PHR USB device, utilizing eMed-ID’s proprietary software, comes in a variety of options, including wristbands, credit cards and keychains.

The eMed-ID package is $69.95 and includes the PHR USB device, four eMed-ID caregiver cards, two eMed-ID In Case of Emergency (I.C.E.) refrigerator cards and a bound report. In addition, eMed-ID is the only medical identification product that also provides customers with an optional legally-binding healthcare surrogate, HIPAA release and living will. The company also partners with the “Silver Alert” program, modeled after “Amber Alert,” to help protect an increasing number of citizens with cognitive impairments.

For those interested in starting their own business, eMed-ID represents an ideal franchise opportunity given the current economic conditions by providing interested franchisees a low-cost of entry. The company is offering candidates the opportunity with a total investment of less than $10,000. Three-year term financing is available to qualified candidates for approximately $38 a week.

SCM Microsystems, Inc. a leading provider of solutions for secure access, secure identity and secure exchange, is expanding its smart card reader product family with three new models that usher in a new era of compact, portable, personal devices.

The new handheld, USB or Near Field Communication (NFC) connected readers are designed to be carried – on key rings, in pockets or purses – and used every day with contact or contactless smart cards, regardless of technology or manufacturer. In many instances, users insert the card and leave it in the reader – leaving them with a single small device for all smart card-related needs.

Smart cards are being used worldwide to secure identities in many applications, such as bank payment cards, employee access badges, government identity cards and healthcare IDs. SCM’s new readers enable cardholders to use their smart cards anytime, anywhere with PCs, the Internet or other terminals. Many models allow physical access to buildings, too. Cardholders can use the reader to pay more securely or to authenticate their network identities with banks, employers, government agencies, or healthcare providers. They can even download discounts or promotion links from NFC smart posters, take them home and load them into a PC.

“Our new readers address two important market drivers that are at the core of our strategy, the growth of contactless technology and the convergence of physical access and IT security systems,” said Felix Marx, chief executive officer of SCM Microsystems. “Organizations making large scale deployments need to provide their end users with ways to use smart cards for secure physical entry, as well as with PCs and over the Internet at home, at work or at school. We engineered these personal smart card readers to fill that gap. They are compact and ultra-portable, so people can carry them to use with their smart cards wherever they go.”

The new smart card readers are the SCR3500 SmartFold, the SCT3511 and the @MAXX lite. SCM will make them available in August through both OEM and distribution channels.

SCR3500 SmartFold: portable contact smart card reader

The SCR3500 SmartFold is a uniquely designed small, portable contact smart card reader that fits easily on a key ring and in every pocket. Since it is easy to carry around, users do not have to wait to come home to make secure online transactions. Online services can be accessed and payments can be made from anywhere, with full protection from password stealing spyware. The reader is unfolded and inserted into a free USB port of a notebook. Then, the smart card in ID-1 (credit card) format is inserted into the reader to enable secure access to bank accounts, online payments, Web services or company information systems.

SCT3511: contact and contactless USB token

The SCT3511 is a USB token with both contact and ISO 14443 and MIFARE(TM) contactless capabilities. It acts as a contact reader for ID-000 (SIM card format) smart cards, and has an antenna for use with a dual interface contact/contactless smart card that supports an antenna connection. This device is ideal for contactless payment and ticketing applications. Additionally, it is used for converged physical and logical access control in the enterprise. At work, with the smart card inserted, it is used for secure logon to networks or PCs using a PKI digital identity certificates. It can also be used for more secure physical access to the building instead of the usual employee badge.

@MAXX lite: contact/contactless USB token with integrated Flash memory

@MAXX lite is the newest addition to SCM’s innovative @MAXX family of products. Like the SCT3511, @MAXX lite is a token with both contact and contactless smart card-based functionalities. It adds on-board Flash memory for secure storage of sensitive data. With a smart card in PC-connected mode, @MAXX lite encrypts data on a hard disk and the onboard Flash memory, and protects access by requiring a PIN entry. Other uses include contactless payment, ticketing applications, secure logon to PCs and networks with a digital identity certificate, storing encrypted and PIN protected logins and passwords in the smart card or Flash, or filling Web forms using securely stored personal information.

Digi extends USB device capabilities in virtualization, retail and healthcare applications

Digi International introduced two new AnywhereUSB(R) products, the AnywhereUSB TS and AnywhereUSB/2. The AnywhereUSB TS is the industry’s first combined USB and serial over IP hub. It combines Digi’s patented Realport(R) USB-over-IP and Realport(R) Serial-over-IP technology in one product allowing customers to easily network both USB and serial devices with one solution.

The AnywhereUSB/2 is a compact USB hub featuring Realport USB-over-IP technology. This allows the product to easily connect USB devices anywhere on a wired or wireless network and is perfect for use in space-constrained environments. AnywhereUSB products are ideal for connecting USB devices to networks in virtualization, retail and healthcare applications.

“We are growing the product line to address specific customer needs,” said Stephen Popovich, vice president of business development, Digi International. “In addition to allowing customers to connect both serial and USB devices with one hub, the AnywhereUSB TS provides customers greater flexibility to migrate from serial to USB devices. This is common in healthcare with equipment like blood analyzers or glucose meters and in retail environments.”

Digi’s entire line of AnywhereUSB products is also perfect for use with virtual machine software, a market growing at 50 percent year over year. AnywhereUSB makes it easy for a USB device like a USB authentication key to be supported over the network by an application in a virtual environment such as VMware, Microsoft Virtual Server and Xen.

AnywhereUSB products eliminate the need for locally-attached host PCs and break the traditional five-meter USB cabling distance limitation. Customers can access and monitor their devices anywhere an Internet connection is available to simplify operations and reduce IT support.

The AnywhereUSB/2 features two USB ports and one Ethernet port. The AnywhereUSB TS features four USB ports, four serial ports and one Ethernet port. It also includes patented Realport serial-to-Ethernet technology that allows customers to easily network enable their serial devices. All AnywhereUSB products are compatible with bulk or interrupt type USB devices such as bar-code scanners, printers, fingerprint scanners and card readers. Digi’s Watchport(R) USB cameras, Watchport Sensors and Edgeport(R) USB-to- serial Converters are also compatible.
