Actel Corporation announced FlashPro4, the newest hardware programmer supporting Actel’s flash FPGAs: the IGLOO series and ProASIC 3 series (including RT ProASIC3), SmartFusion(TM) and Actel Fusion families. FlashPro4 also supports FPGA embedded software program and debug managed by Actel’s SoftConsole Integrated Design Environment (IDE) for embedded processors.

FlashPro4 offers high performance communication through the use of USB 2.0 and is high-speed compliant for full use of the 480 Mbps bandwidth. For IGLOO nano 1.2 V core FPGAs, 1.2 V programming is supported.

“FlashPro4 provides our flash FPGA customers with the latest hardware technology for performing both hardware design implementation and software program implementation for embedded processor designs,” said Wendy Lockhart, senior manager, design solutions, Actel. “In addition, it provides a common approach for facilitating FPGA debug for tools such as Synopsys® Identify RTL debugger and Actel’s on-chip debug, plus SoftConsole, Actel’s embedded software IDE. It is also low enough in cost that our customers can include it with their end systems, so their customers and support personnel can readily perform in-system programming updates in the field.” Read the rest of this entry »

LaCie announced the LaCie XtremKey – offering industrial-strength protection for your data. With capacities up to 64GB and an impenetrable shell, the XtremKey is a truly rugged USB key that stands up to the elements.

LaCie, originator of the flat, award-winning key-shaped USB flash drives, shields the XtremKey’s premium flash memory modules inside a 2mm metal pipe casing. Sealed with wear-resistant screw threads and a rubber O-ring, it is watertight up to 100 meters. The LaCie XtremKey is also resistant to 5-meter drops, fierce heat and bitter cold – it holds up in any environment, no matter where you take it (+200°C / -50°C).

XtremKey is constructed with zamac, a metal alloy composed of zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper that’s so strong, it can withstand the pressure of a 10-ton truck. Less than three inches tall, this flash memory drive puts strength, security and storage right on your keyring.

“The XtremKey offers extreme durability and capacity in a convenient, well-protected and fun form factor,” said Alexis Kobassian, Product Manager, LaCie. “Despite the robust, industrial-strength protection we’ve added, it’s still a LaCie key that brings ease-of-use and reliability to customers looking to keep their data secure while on the go.”

Equipped with the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface, XtremKey offers instant compatibility, outstanding transfer speeds and cross-platform convenience to all PC and Mac® users. With writing speeds up to 30 Mb/s and reading up to 40 Mb/s, you don’t have to sacrifice performance for protection.

Designed by Constance Guisset exclusively for LaCie, XtremKey works relentlessly to keep your data protected, all while being portable, powerful and perfectly suited for your life’s adventures. The key, when placed on a desktop, even shows some playful personality with a perfectly balanced wobble effect. Read the rest of this entry »

LucidPort Ships Second Generation USB 3.0 to SATA Bridge

LucidPort Technology released the USB302, a second generation USB 3.0 to SATA-II bridge designed for external USB storage devices. Following in the footsteps of the industry’s first USB 3.0 device, the LucidPort USB300, the USB302 is physically smaller and consumes less power than any other chip of its kind. Its support for USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) allows it to run 20 to 100% faster than comparable USB 3.0 drives that use legacy mass storage drivers.

The UASP standard was developed by the USB-IF to enhance the efficiency of USB storage devices. It delivers faster and more consistent performance while lowering CPU utilization. “The market expects USB 3.0 to be fast,” said Reid Augustin, VP of Product Development at LucidPort. “UASP makes this a reality by running external USB drives as fast as, or even faster than drives connected directly to the motherboard.”

The USB302 is highly configurable and supports many premium features. These include automatic fan control, automatic standby timer, write protection, one touch backup, a safe power down button, Blu-ray drive support, and various activity and free space indicators. The USB302 keeps total BOM costs low by requiring only a single voltage (3.3V) and a single clock source (30 MHz).

The USB302 is shipping now and available in a 48 pin (6×6 mm) QFN package.

Huntkey Introduces 90W Slim Universal Notebook Adapter

Huntkey Enterprise Group expands their product line for consumer products and launches the latest adapter for laptops worldwide — the 90W Slim Universal Notebook Adapter.

It specially targets fashionable and business people or traveler groups. 90W slim features as slim and light design technology and three other multi-functions: adjustable voltage function, 5V USB charger function and universal compatibility function.

“Huntkey’s 90W Slim Notebook Adapter is dedicated to business people or other kinds of travelers. Such a light and ultra-slim fashionable design could compact users’ notebook bags and reduce traveling burden,” Villa Lee, Huntkey product manager said. Compared to the normal adapter, its 1.6cm thickness is less than half of a normal one. Its compact size (14.5cm x 7.15cm x 1.6cm) makes it easy to take. Moreover, its +5V USB charger function could charge digital devices at anywhere and anytime such as digital cameras, MP3 players, MP4s, mobile phones, PDAs, etc. “There is no need to take other peripheral chargers and it saves your package space,” Vila Lee said.

“‘Universal’ means nice compatibility, 90W Slim Universal Notebook Adapter highlights its strong compatibility, and can match most brand notebook on the market,” Villa Lee also said.

15V-20V voltage adjustable function and 10+1 different tips guarantees its stronger compatibility, not only for mainstream laptops, but also Japanese brand laptops, which have a special output voltage regulation.

Expo launches MCCI ExpressDisk(TM) and MCCI Catena® 1910

MCCI Corporation, the world’s leading developer of USB software solutions for the portable device industry, is hosting a seminar, “Advances in USB” at the 2010 Wireless Japan Expo in Tokyo. The Expo takes place from 14-16 July. The seminar is on 15 July. During the Expo, USB 3.0 SuperSpeed software products will be demonstrated at MCCI’s booth B205 in the East Hall of the Tokyo Big Sight.

Each year at the Wireless Japan Expo, MCCI sponsors a free seminar on important USB issues. This year’s seminar on July 15 will have experts from ASMedia, Texas Instruments, and MCCI updating participants on subjects such as USB 3.0 SuperSpeed chip development, USB 3.0 software architecture, the new USB Audio/Video Class, and USB storage.

“MCCI, in addition to product leadership, takes a leading role in related standards activities,” explains Terry Moore, MCCI CEO. “Top tier manufacturers need leading edge technology to remain at the forefront of their markets. The Wireless Japan seminar is targeted at engineers and product planners for top consumer electronics manufacturers. We help them keep their USB knowledge up to date.”

MCCI product demonstrations at the expo include MCCI’s end-to-end USB 3.0 SuperSpeed software solution, comprising a full xHCI host stack, USB 3.0 device stack, and USB-Attached SCSI host driver and device support. The MCCI ExpressDisk driver products (BOT and UAS) support significantly improved throughput to USB-connected storage devices. We will also demonstrate the MCCI Catena 1910. This Catena is an HSIC (High Speed Inter-Chip USB) Device, Host Emulator, and Protocol Analyzer. It supports all standard USB operational characteristics, including LPM. The digital video demonstration will show operation with an HSIC hub and a mass storage device.
