Silicon-Proven DesignWare IP Lowers Design Risk and Allows Interoperability with USB 3.0-Enabled Products
Synopsys announced that its DesignWare SuperSpeed USB 3.0 xHCI (Extensible Host Controller Interface) IP has successfully passed the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) SuperSpeed USB certification.
The xHCI specification provides a standardized method for SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) host controllers to communicate with the USB 3.0 software stack. To achieve certification, the IP must support the new U1 and U2 power modes as well as all four USB transfer speeds, including SuperSpeed (5.0 Gbps), Hi-Speed (480 Mbps), Full-Speed (12 Mbps) and Low-Speed USB (1.5 Mbps). Synopsys is the only USB IP provider with both certified SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Host and Device IP.
The complete DesignWare SuperSpeed USB 3.0 IP solution offers a unified architecture, enabling designers to significantly lower integration risk by eliminating the requirement to manage two distinct USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 datapaths in their system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Optimized for small area and low-power, the DesignWare SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Host Controller is already in products that are in mass production. It is ideal for battery-powered, portable devices. Agreement Driven by Performance Needs of Mobile Device Market
MIPI Alliance and the USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced the signing of a letter agreement between the two organizations. The agreement will facilitate the combined use of the MIPI M-PHY(SM) physical layer with the SuperSpeed USB protocol and software layers to produce the SuperSpeed Inter-Chip (SSIC) specification. Currently under development, the specification will bring M-PHY’s exceptional high bandwidth and low power, and the significant performance enhancements of SuperSpeed USB “inside” the mobile device interface system. The two groups anticipate the SSIC specification will be available to USB adopters in early 2012.
“USB 3.0 and MIPI Alliance both benefit from this agreement,” said Brian O’Rourke, Research Director at In-Stat. “USB 3.0 gains a path inside the box of a number of large, fast growing applications, including mobile phones and digital cameras. And MIPI gains access to the next generation of the world’s most successful interface technology and its software.” Read the rest of this entry »

Texas Instruments’ certified TUSB7340 and TUSB7320 Host Controllers further advance a competitive SuperSpeed USB ecosystem
The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the certification of the TUSB7340 SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) four-port host controller and the TUSB7320 SuperSpeed USB two-port host controller from Texas Instruments. As SuperSpeed USB adoption accelerates across the industry, the growing availability of products continues to spur a competitive ecosystem while driving innovation. The certification of these host controllers advances the SuperSpeed USB ecosystem by creating additional certified solutions for manufacturers and developers.
“The SuperSpeed USB ecosystem has seen enormous expansion since the second certified host controller was announced four months ago, and this latest certification increases the choices available to manufacturers looking to develop new and innovative products,” said Jeff Ravencraft, President & COO, USB-IF. “Consumers trust USB because of its interoperability and ease of use, and the certification and logo licensing programs create an easy way to identify products that will interoperate straight out-of-the-box. With the groundswell of certified products helping to create a competitive ecosystem, SuperSpeed USB remains the most cost-effective and trusted high-performance interconnect solution worldwide.”
The certification of Texas Instruments’ host controllers provides the assurance that these products will interoperate with the billions of USB-enabled devices available on the market while delivering the speed, power efficiency and power delivery specified by the USB 3.0 standard.
“Texas Instruments understands the importance of standard compliance for creating a strong and diverse market,” said Eric L. Williams, General Manager, Interface & Clock Products Business Unit, Texas Instruments. “This certification of the TUSB7340 and TUSB7320 host controllers demonstrates our commitment to providing innovative solutions that are fully interoperable and compliant to the specification.”
