Global Unichip Corp. (GUC), the Flexible ASIC Leader, announced that its USB 3.0 Device Controller IP has passed the USB-IF Test Procedure for SuperSpeed products and is now listed in the Integrator List.

The USB 3.0 Device Controller IP supports SuperSpeed USB peripheral functionality that provides a 10x data transfer rate over Hi-Speed USB.  It is backward compatible with USB 2.0 to ensure interoperability with billions of USB products already on the market.

GUC’s USB 3.0 Device Controller IP is highly configurable and employs an aggressive power saving methodology. It is compatible with USB 3.0 PHYs, including GUC’s own USB 3.0 PHY IP, through a standard PIPE interface.  GUC’s USB 3.0 PHY IP is currently under silicon characterization and expects to pass the complete USB-IF test by the first quarter of 2012. USB’s Battery Charging Standard Gains Adoption

A new generation of USB hubs and devices is enabling:

  • Use of a standard full-function USB hub for charging
  • Fast charging even when the attached computer is off
  • Charging up to 3x faster than USB 2.0′s old maximum rate

To date, USB charging has been a source of enormous confusion. Consumers expected to plug any USB device into any USB hub, and for those devices to charge. Unfortunately, USB 2.0 as originally designed does not allow devices to pull more than 100mA without software negotiation, and only 500mA with.

100mA isn’t enough for most devices to charge. And to achieve charge rates higher than 500mA, popular devices such as the Apple iPad™ have introduced proprietary hardware negotiation.

This has left consumers with bins full of device-specific chargers. The USB Battery Charging specification (BC 1.1 and later) aims to fix that.

For example with the new Amazon Kindle Fire, a micro USB cable, and Plugable’s new USB2-HUB4BC 4-port USB hub, the Fire will charge even with the computer off, and charge faster than USB’s old maximum of 500mA.

For less than the cost of a dedicated charger, it’s possible to buy a hub that supports both charging and syncing, and isn’t tied to any one device.

The Plugable USB2-HUB4BC is available on Amazon now for $19.95 at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005P2BY5I/.

DisplayLink and I-O DATA DEVICE announced the availability of the I-O DATA USB-RGB3/D USB 3.0 to DVI display adapter. Incorporating the DisplayLink DL-3100 chip for connectivity and virtual graphics, it is the first USB 3.0 enabled display adapter to ship in Japan.

Featuring the robust DisplayLink 3.0 video compression and support for resolutions up to 2048 x 1152, including 1080p, even the newest notebooks, netbooks and PCs can enjoy the benefits of multi-screen computing. And with the throughput of SuperSpeed USB 3.0, those monitors will display high-performance, full-screen HD video, 3D games, rich 2D graphics and multi-channel audio.

“Mixing and matching devices with different peripherals will continue to become even more popular with USB 3.0’s speed and versatility,” said Dennis Crespo, DisplayLink executive vice president of marketing and business development. “And this is as true in Japan as any other technology-embracing market.” Read the rest of this entry »
