The USB modem form-factor continues to lead the pack in mobile broadband modem shipment volumes, with an estimated 110 million units shipping worldwide in 2011.
This form-factor, along with embedded modem modules and mobile hotspot routers, will contribute to the market’s 46% YoY growth, with an estimated 150 million total shipments in 2011.
“USB dominates the market due to its relatively low cost and easy use, as it’s often used as an after-market upgrade for computer owners,” says Jeff Orr, group director, mobile devices. “As more 3G networks come online and as new 4G ones emerge, this lends itself toward an upgrade market opportunity for USB modems, followed by new PC purchases with an embedded modem module.”
Embedded modem modules enjoyed the second largest market share, with a forecast of 30 million units shipped in 2011 to PC and CE device manufacturers. The majority of this growth is due to the rapid adoption of 3G-enabled media tablets, such as Apple’s iPad 2.
Mobile hotspot routers will also grow at a respectable 50% YoY as this segment continues to gain awareness. PC Cards will have the smallest number of shipments, with only one million devices shipped for 2011.

Texas Instruments introduced two system-on-chip (SoC) solutions in the PurePath Wireless audio product family, aimed at delivering uncompressed, CD-quality wireless multichannel and multipoint audio streaming capabilities to consumer applications with USB ports, such as PCs, TVs, set top boxes, game consoles and more.
The new single-chip CC8521 and CC8531 solutions contain USB audio support for all major operating systems and can enable streaming of up to four simultaneous audio channels from one USB audio source. Together with a corresponding USB dongle reference design, the new PurePath Wireless products allow developers to design low-cost, small USB dongles for wireless audio applications, without code development or in-depth understanding of USB protocols.

CMS Products announced the release of its latest USB 3.0 version of BounceBack Backup and Recovery System.
Utilizing the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, the new BounceBack Backup and Recovery System sports a sleek new look, maintaining its lightweight, portable profile at a mere seven ounces. LeCroy Corporation announced the availability of USB 2.0 High Speed Inter-chip (HSIC) protocol decode annotation for its WaveSurfer, WaveRunner, WavePro, WaveMaster and LabMaster oscilloscope product lines.
HSIC technology is capable of communicating between microchips in an embedded sub-system, leveraging the traditional host-device topology of USB and, hence, the large amount of code that already exists. This makes HSIC extremely lucrative in areas demanding fast time-to-market, for example, the mobile industry which includes smart phones and tablets. Because LeCroy engineers are fully engaged with USB industry leaders and standards bodies, they have been able to work in parallel with the industry adoption of this rapidly emerging standard and ensure that test solutions are available at precisely the time they are needed.
LeCroy HSIC USB solutions consist of an intuitive HSIC decode annotation overlaid on the physical layer (analog) waveform signal on the oscilloscope display with corresponding tabular display of data and a quick zoom to a specific packet. In addition, WaveRunner, WavePro, WaveMaster and LabMaster support LeCroy’s ProtoSync ® option, which takes the testing to an even higher level by providing a transaction and application level view of the HSIC traffic in the familiar CATC protocol analyzer view. The separate decode annotation on the oscilloscope physical layer signals and corresponding CATC protocol analyzer view is completely linked and time synchronized to provide the fastest possible debug.
